Let’s get you started…
As the alternative apps provided by Apple are quite different than what most of the Windows users are used to, you might want to download and install Office 2016 on your Mac.
* Please note the following guide is for Home users only. Also, the entire Microsoft Office 2016 suite for Mac includes Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Word and Outlook.
Before you begin please note the following essential tips for the installation process: The time estimated for the download and installation is one hour. I would strongly advise you not to open any Microsoft Office applications until the installation has been completed.
Plug your computer into a power supply before beginning the installation in order to prevent your computer going into sleep mode. If it falls asleep, the process will continue from the point it left off once your computer is awake.
Note that if you have a new copy of Office and you have received your key electronically, you will need to redeem it first.
Before you start installing Microsoft Office for Mac make sure you meet the following system requirements:
Requirements to install Office on a Mac:
- Intel processor, Operating system: Mac OS X 10.10 or later
- iOS: Office for iPad and iPhone requires iOS 8.0 or later. Office for iPad Pro requires iOS 9.0 or later.
- Memory: 4GB RAM
- HDD Space: 6GB or more
- Required display resolution: 1280 x 800.
- Graphics require a DirectX 10 graphics card.
Here’s how to install Office in 8 easy steps:
Go to My Office Account at www.office.com/myaccount. You need to sign up, or sign in with your correct Microsoft account.
Now you’re seeing your account page, all you need to do is click on Install. On the next page, under the Installation information, select Install and you will begin the downloading of the office package. ( Fig. 1 & Fg. 2)
After the download has finished, open Finder, then go to Downloads and double click the file, which you have successfully downloaded (Fig. 3) The file name you are looking for should be ending in .pkg and should be named Microsoft_Office_2016_Installer.pkg. The name of the file might vary. Double-click your file and the magic of installation will start working its wonders.
* It might be useful to know that it is possible to see an error message stating that the file cannot be opened, because it originates from unidentified developer. In that case, wait for 10 seconds and then try to double-click it again. If you remain stuck at the Verifying… progress bar, cancel or close the window and re-try.
On the first installation pop-up balloon, you will need to click on Continue (Fig. 4). In fact, you will need to click on Continue a couple times. To walk you through the process, click Continue to begin the installation. Afterwards, click Agree after you have read and understood the terms and conditions of the software agreement. Then, click Continue again. Lastly, you need to choose how you would like to install your Office and click Continue one last time.
* It is important to have enough disk space available, which is what your Mac will ask you on the next pop-up balloon.
You can change your install location, and then click Install. Here you have the option of only installing specific Office apps, instead of installing the entire suite. To do that, click the Customise button and uncheck the programs you do not want from the list.
Your Mac login password will be needed to Install the Software. This is the password you use to log in to your device.
After the installation has finished, click on Close.
Wohooo! We’re done. Well, not entirely..
You will need to activate your product. To start the activation process, you need to launch an Office for Mac app. To do so, select the Launchpad icon in the Dock, and you will see all your apps being displayed. Then, click the Microsoft Word icon in the Launchpad. When the Word window opens, you need to click Get Started and start activating.
You’ll have Word 2016 launch, but with a few informational windows along the way, starting with a window that highlights the newly updated features of Word.
Now you’re signed in! Well done, but there is one last thing to do. Aesthetics, of course. What else? How would you like the design of Office to look like?
Pssst, click on Colorful!
Finally, click on Continue and Microsoft Word will launch.
