How to Find a MAC Address in Windows 10

In this guide, you will learn how to find a MAC address in Windows 10 in 7 simple steps as well as Windows vs Mac laptops and which one is right for you.

Every network adapter installed to your device, be it your PC, laptop or tablet has a physical address called MAC. Your MAC address, or “media access control”, is assigned to the device’s network. Its purpose is identification during network communication. It tells routers, for example, how to find and contact your computer.

There are a couple of reasons you might need to find your MAC address. An example is when you need to figure out which device is which, in the case that your router lists the connected devices by their MAC address.

Luckily, you can easily find your MAC address in Windows 10 by just following one of the methods explained in this guide.

What is a MAC address?

It doesn't matter if you use a wired network such as Ethernet or a wireless connection like wi-fi, you still need to use a network software and hardware to connect to the internet.

These things connect you with a computer far away from you, which needs a unique way to identify your device. As your IP address can easily be changed, it needs a way to identify your hardware — this is where a MAC address comes in.

A device's MAC address gives the network the ability to identify hardware rather than network software. It ensures that you always get sent the right data.
