In Windows 10, you decide when and how to get the latest updates to keep your device running smoothly and securely.

Updates in Windows 10

This method is what most people will use to update Windows 10. It’s easily accessible from the Start menu and even provides you automatic prompts to update whenever a new release is available. Let’s take a look at how to check for updates inside the Windows 10 system itself.

  1. Click on the Start menu in your taskbar. This icon has the Windows 10 logo on it. If you’re not familiar with the Windows 10 interface, we recommend reading the Get Started with Windows 10 article on our website.
  2. Select the Settings icon, indicated by a gear. Alternatively, you can use the Windows + I keyboard shortcut to reach this application quicker.
    Windows start
  3. You should see a variety of tiles appear on the screen, all leading to different configuration centers for your device. Here, click on the Update & Security tile.
    Windows Settings
  4. Switch to the Windows Update tab using the left-side pane.
  5. Click on the Check for updates button. This feature requires you to have an active connection to the internet, so Windows 10 can detect any new versions available for you to download.
  6. If an update is found and you’re eligible for the download, click on the Download button. Now, you just need to wait for Windows 10 to download and apply the update, which may take an extended period of time.
    • Make sure that during the update you don’t end your connection to the internet, plug your device out, or manually turn off your device. All of these actions run a high risk of disrupting the update process and may lead to system corruption and data loss.

  7. Your computer may restart several times during the update process. Once it’s done, you might be presented with a screen detailing all the new update features and letting you know that the process is complete.
  8. Once your computer finishes updating, you should be on the latest version of Windows 10 currently available to you. When going back to the same menu in the Settings app, you should see that you’re up to date.

Sometimes, Microsoft makes specific updates available for download by visiting the official website and downloading an update helper. The guide below describes everything you need to know about manually downloading and updating Windows 10.

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft Update Catalog website using any web browser on your computer. This is an official, safe website, meaning that there’s no risk of downloading Windows 10 updates that have been tampered with.
  2. Use the search field to look for the update you want to download. You need to input the KB number of an update. In this example, we’ll be downloading the KB4501375 update.
