What causes the mic to stop working in Discord?

Why’s the Discord mic not working on Windows 10?

There are a few reasons why your discord mic stops working randomly, including:

  • Your mic volume is turned all the way down. Use the volume wheel within Discord to raise it.
  • Your mic is muted. You or a server moderator may have muted your microphone. You can check this by looking in the voice channel and verifying that you don’t have a muted microphone icon next to your display name.
  • The wrong input is selected. Ensure that you have the correct microphone selected in both your system settings and Discord’s configuration.
  • Something is wrong with your Discord installation. If your installation is corrupted, it’s possible that your mic won’t be working. This is most common when using secondary versions of Discord, like Discord PTB or Canary.
  • A hardware issue with your microphone. There’s always a possibility that this problem is not because of your system, but because your mic itself isn’t working. There could be a damaged cable, your USB port malfunctioning, etc.
  • You don’t have the necessary drivers. If your microphone requires a driver, it’s possible that you didn’t install it, which makes it unable to function when you try to use iron Discord.

Now that you know what might be wrong, it's time to get into the solutions to these problems.

Method 2. Restart Discord and run it as administrator

A common issue is that Discord doesn’t have some of the required permissions to run properly on your computer. In this case, your mic might not work as you’d expect it. Simply launch Discord as an administrator to give it all the permissions needed to run as intended.

  1. Exit out of Discord entirely by closing the application. Open your tray menu in the taskbar, and right-click on the Discord icon. Choose “Quit Discord” to stop the program from running in the background.
    quit discord
  2. Find your Discord launcher. Right-click on it once, and then choose Run as administrator from the context menu.
    run discord as administrator
  3. Click “Yes” if you’re prompted by the User Account Control (UAC) screen. This will allow Discord to run with elevated permissions which may be required for Discord to be able to access your microphone.
    run discord as administrator
  4. You may be required to enter the computer’s administrator password. If you don’t know it, reach out to the person who owns the PC, or learn how to convert your user account into an administrator account.
  5. Test if you can use your mic now.

Method 3. Select the correct microphone in Discord

If you’ve ever used multiple mics, or have a virtual input, it’s possible that Discord is picking up the wrong one. This means that the microphone you’re trying to use is not actually connected to Discord, leading to it not picking up any sound. Here’s how you can get this sorted out.

  1. Open Discord and navigate to User settings > Voice & audio. Click on the drop-down menu under Input Device and choose the correct microphone.
select the correct microphone for discord
  2. Make sure that the Input Volume slider is all the way up. This will ensure that your mic isn’t muted, or that the volume isn’t too low to pick up.
  3. Close the interface by clicking on the X button or pressing Esc on your keyboard once. Now, you can join a voice call or channel and see if your microphone works.

Method 4. Reset the voice settings in Discord

You might want to consider resetting your Discord audio settings if you’re having trouble with your microphone, or if no one can hear you when you speak on Discord. Make sure to take note of your current configuration in case you need to re-configure how Discord works afterward.

  1. Open Discord
  2. Click the Settings icon on the homepage of Discord
  3. Click User settings > then click Voice & audio
  4. Click Reset voice settings button.

Here’s how to get one of the beta versions of Discord:
