If you are a Mac user, you are most likely looking for different ways to do things better. This means anytime a new application or software upgrade occurs, you are probably anxious to see what is available. If you have been using Excel 2016, it is time to upgrade to Excel 2019 for Mac, and enjoy all the 2016 features you have been having, as well as new features that you will notice in 2019.
Excel 2019 for Mac comes with other general improvements that include the following;
Have you ever selected too many cells or the wrong ones? If yes, don’t worry anymore. You can now deselect extraneous cells without having to start over. You can now deselect any cells within the selected range using the Deselect Tool. While pressing the Ctrl key, you can click, or click-and-drag, to deselect any cells or ranges within a selection.
In case you want to look for PivotTable data across days, months, quarters and years, you can achieve the same by using PivotTable with timeline filter, just by sliding the date range.
Break the Language Barrier
It is now easy to translate text into a different language. All you need is to select Review > Translate> Translate Document. You then select your language to see the translation. A copy of the translated document will open in a separate window. This option is available for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Customize the Ribbon
The Ribbon Customization to Excel 2019 for Mac has been extended. This means you can set preferences for Quick Access toolbar, and personalize the ribbon just the way you want it to be. Additionally, you can change default tabs, or even create custom tabs to contain your frequently used commands.
The new Excel 2019 for Mac has one-click fixes for accessibility issues. The new Accessibility Checker is better than ever and has updated support for international standards. There are handy recommendations to make your documents more accessible.
Another improved feature we have to talk about is the “see and restore previous versions”. You can now look back and see any previous versions of a workbook. You can even restore one in case you like.
New Functions in Excel 2019 for Mac
There are a couple of notable function additions that come with Excel 2019 for Mac. Notable of these include the following;
This is a new function similar to CONCATENATE. First of all, it is shorter, thus easier to type. Ideally, it supports a range of references, including cell references.
The CONCAT function combines the text from multiple ranges and/or strings. However, it doesn’t provide the delimiter or IgnoreEmpty arguments.
To include delimiters such as spacing or ampersands between the texts you want to combine and to remove empty arguments that you don’t want to appear in the combined text results, you are instead advised to use the TEXTJOIN function.
Are you tired tying complicated, nested IF functions? If yes, the IFS function is the solution. Using this function, conditions are testes in the order you make specifications. If passed, the result is returned. Additionally, you can also specify an else “catch-all” in case none of the conditions are met.
The IFS function checks whether one or more condition are met, and returns a value that is in correspondence to the first TRUE condition. IFS can take place of multiple nested IF statements. Additionally, it is much easier to read with multiple conditions.
The IFS functions allow up to 127 different conditions. However, it is advisable not to nest too many conditions using IF or IFS statement. This is because multiple conditions need to be entered in the correct manner, and it can be quite difficult to build, test and update.
The SWITCH function evaluates one value, what we call expression, against a list of values, then returns the result corresponding to the first matching value. In case there is no match, an optional default value is returned.
The TEXTJOIN function combines the text from multiple ranges and/or strings. It includes a delimiter that you specify between each text value to be combined. In case the delimiter is an empty text string, this function will effectively concatenate the ranges.
Improved Visualization Features in Excel 2019
Above all, there are three new visualization features in Excel 2019 that you will actually use. Three of the most useful features include;
Data Visualization with Insights
We can say in a general manner that there are two types of Excel users – those who know what kind of data they are looking for, and the best charts, and then the rest of us. The Insights feature makes a lot of suggestions on great visuals.
Funnel and 2D map Charts
A funnel chart is a special type of chart used to illustrate the states in a process. Excel now supports the funnel chart, as well as map chart of geographical data. To use a funnel chart, your data needs to be arranged to have at least one column for the possible stages in your process, with the second column taking care of the values.
Geographical and Stock Chart
With all the AI-enables engines that Microsoft has been working on, the results are now visible. Because there is no end to the data out there that needs to be processed, we can now stop wasting precious time using Google searches and let Excel pull in all the information we need.
This functionality is available for stock and geographical data. All you need is to ensure your column contains geographical data. You can also choose from a long list of available data fields to add to your columns.
