As the years pass and technology improves, the work station has started to change right along with it. Instead of working just in an office at a desktop computer on a shared network, employees may work from anywhere in the world—a coffee shop, their home office, or even from a hotel room. Travel is part of the job now, and you are expected to get work done from just about any location.

Fortunately, Microsoft has created their Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service to address these concerns. No matter where your employees travel or work from, they will have access to the tools they need, as long as they have an internet connection. Plus, they can access these files from a variety of devices, so if the computer needs to stay home, they can get what they needed. All while ensuring that your security remains intact.

  • Securely connect remote users
  • Users can get access from managed or unmanaged devices
  • Connect to session-based or virtual-machine based desktops
  • Use datacenter apps within corporate networks or from the internet

 Features

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service provides the ability to centralize and control the applications and data that employees need to perform their job from a variety of devices. Built on the solid foundation of Microsoft Windows Server 2008, this new version includes many updates and enhancements that will dramatically improve the experience for your employees. Read on to see the highlights of Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service.

Adaptive Graphics-- Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service automatically finds the right codec for the right content instead of using a one size fits all approach. Many codecs are included for different multimedia, including videos, images, and text. Progressive rendering allows for a responsive experience even on a high constrained network.

UDP Now Supported—In addition to TCP, UDP is now supported in Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service which provides a better experience over a WAN network. However, UDP is not always possible, and in such cases, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service will automatically use TCP.

Auto Detect Networks—The end user no longer has to specify the network in the Remote Desktop Connection client—instead, the client now automatically detects the network type and also adapts as the network changes.

Single Sign-On Improvements—While it was possible to enable single sign-on functionality in past versions of the Microsoft Windows Server, doing so was a challenging and cumbersome process. In the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service, this process has been streamlined by eliminating the need to use multiple certificates. You can also use locally logged on domain credentials.

Multi-Touch—If you access the server using a touch pad, the common touch pad gestures are supported right out of the box. These gestures will be replicated I the server, as if the server itself was using the touch pad.

Discovery Remote Applications Through Email—You can find the correct remote workspace to connect to just by providing your email address. No longer will your users need to wonder where to connect to or struggle with complicated log-in credentials of long website URLs.

Support for Additional Web Browsers--Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service now includes support for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari web browsers.

Metro-Style Desktop Interface—Take advantage of the newly designed Metro-style Remote Desktop app, allowing you to take greater advantage of the new features and touch-first remoting experience. You can easily discover remote resources, optimize touch gestures, and easily reconnect to your favorites.

New Pooled Virtual Desktop Collection Model—A “pooled virtual desktop collection” model refers to the idea that a large number of virtual machines can be managed as a single entity by using a single virtual desktop template. This allows you to create virtual machines in batches from a virtual desktop template, patched by only modifying that virtual desktop template, and recreated and refreshed automatically by the RD Connection Broker. This makes it easier than ever to manage your virtual desktops.

User Profile Disk—When your users log on to different virtual machines within the available pool, the user profile disk gets mounted, providing access to the user's complete profile. This means that the user can access the same set of files and configurations on multiple virtual desktops with one profile.

PowerShell Support—All platform functions and capabilities can be controlled through a comprehensive and rich PowerShell layer. IT administrators can use this layer to build automation to fit Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service into their infrastructure.

Scenario-Focused Wizard—Included as part of the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service, the scenario-focused wizard makes it easier than ever to create a complete Remote Desktop deployment. This wizard creates all the roles needed for Remote Desktop easily and configures these roles to communicate with other roles. Lastly, it provides a quick user interface to create your first virtual desktop or session collection as well. This wizard comes in two versions: Quick Start, which is optimized for deploying Remote Desktop on one server, and Standard, which allows you to deploy Remote Desktop Services across multiple servers at once, which allows for a customized deployment.

Users can use any device with their User CAL, and there are no set system requirements for those devices, other than the need to keep the devices updated and use Windows Server 2012 or later to access the server.
