What are cores and CALs? What do I need them for?

CAL stands for “Client Access License.” To maintain data and system integrity, Microsoft requires server users to each have their own client access licenses. Without one of these CALs, a user might not be able to use software on the network or even view other people's files!

You can license the Standard edition with Core-based licensing, too. All of your physical cores have to be licensed, and you need at least 16 core licenses for each server and 8 core licenses per processor.
